Regional director Edilberto Carrabacan of the Department of Public Works and Highways in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR) have announced the allocation of P58.35 million pesos for assistance in disaster risk reduction measures for the province of Ifugao. This is to address the damages brought by two series of typhoons that devastated the province in September of this year, typhoons Quiel and Pedring. Carrabacan reported that part of said fund will be used to restore (in the long term) the Burnay Bridge in the capital town of Lagawe and Guihob Bridge in Banaue, Ifugao. (photos of damaged bridges shown in this article). Initially, Carrabacan said that P40 million pesos will be utilized to restore Burnay Bridge and P10 million pesos for Guihob Bridge.
The announcement was made by Carrabacan during the Regional Development Council (RDC-CAR) meeting held in Banaue Hotel, Banaue, Ifugao on November 17, 2011. This was a response to the report of Governor Eugene Balitang during the said meeting specifically on the effects of environmental degradation and threats from natural and man-made disasters.
Recently, the two damaged bridges in the province have been restored temporarily but only allowed for light vehicles. With these initiatives, it is hoped that Ifugao will stabilize its road networks for long term development purposes.
