IFUGAO grapplers lived up to expectations as they scored top honors in the wrestling event of the recently held 2014 Batang Pinoy Luzon Games in Naga City.
The Cordillera based athletes took the competition by storm as they put in tow four gold, three silver, and one bronze at the close of the national sports competition backed by the Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission.
Arselyn Battatong (44kgs), Lovelyn Bandao (48kgs), Clarizza Mae Hagitan (56kgs) powered the Ifugao team after sweeping all gold medals in the secondary girls division.
In the elementary division, Maricca Hagitan copped the top spot in the girl’s 40-kilogram bulingit category while teammate Dan Gayuchan bagged a bronze medal from the bulingit boy’s 35-kilogram contest.Bless Napiloy (52kgs) and Annie Gumadol (48kgs) settled with a modest second honors finishes.
Ifugao wrestling coach Marilyn Buyucan-Bunolna told Sun.Star Baguio she is proud and happy with the outcome of the national sports contest.
“We are happy to be among the best team to finish this year, out of the eight competitors we brought, five of them are personally training with the Hungduan wrestlers,” Bunolna said.
Ifugao improved their medal count from last year after surprising competitors coming from the various cities and provinces of Luzon bagging three gold and three silver medals at the close of the Luzon games held in Iba, Zambales.
“This is just among the first challenges that we have, we still have to be fully prepared come the national finals on December,” Bunolna said.
“All of our medallists will qualify for the national final that is why we have to improve our training and preparations,” Bunolna added.
The 2014 Batang Pinoy National Finals will see action on December 9-13 in Bacolod City.
Recently, Ifugao has been lifting its status in the wrestling sport community directing to new heights and making its presence felt in various national competitions.
