Five Ifugao girl scouts receive national awards

Girl Scouts of the Philippines

     Recognizing their exemplary leadership, perseverance, and sense of responsibility towards nation building, five senior high school girl scouts in Ifugao received the "Chief Girl Scout Medal" at the PICC Complex, Manila on November 14, 2011. The award is the highest award of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines.
     They are the following: Liza Bayaona (Mayoyao), Shaena Joy Tapay (Mayoyao), Everly Pakelman (Mayoyao), Glory Potnol (Alfonso Lista), and Camille De Leo (Alfonso Lista).  They are among the cream of the crop five hundred five senior and cadet girl scouts in the whole country who received the award this year.
     Their fruitful services centered on cultural preservation and development of an eco-friendly environment for a sustainable community.

DOST installs weather station in IFSU

AWS

     Automatic weather stations (AWS) are installed in strategic locations of the Cordillera including the Ifugao State University, according to PIA.
     AWS is a stand-alone device that measures weather-related factors such as air pressure, temperature, and humidity. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) also installed AWS devices to Abra and BSU-Benguet.
     According to DOST, another device that monitors rainfall (Automatic Rain Gauges - ARGs) will soon be installed in all provinces of CAR which can be accessible online using Google Earth.

Most wanted Ifugao drug dealer nabbed

Ifugao's most wanted drug dealer was arrested by the police at around 5a.m. on Thursday, according to Abs-Cbn News.

     The suspect, a certain Peter Ambojnon, resident of Hapid, Lamut was caught inside his house by virtue of a search warrant issued by executive judge Florendo Flor Jr. of Nueva Vizcaya.

     During the arrest, police recovered 10 sachets of suspected "shabu", drug paraphernalia, an improvised caliber .22 handgun, and bullets of calibers .38 and .45.

     The suspect is currently detained at the Ifugao provincial jail and is facing charges for violating R.A.9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of the Philippines. Ambojnon denied the allegations.#

2011 prov'l athletic meet formally opens in Lamut

Lamut, Ifugao - More than 10,000 participants and spectators from 11 municipalities of the province gathered here for the athletic meet, according to reports from PIA.
     The event started on Dec. 7 and to culminate on Dec. 10 with the following regular sports to be competed: track and field, ball games, boxing, swimming, gymnastics, chess, arnis, taekwondo, and archery. Winners will have the chance to compete for the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) Meet to be held next year.
     Furthermore, featured events in the provincial meet include ethnic games such as "bultong" (wrestling), "munbayu"(rice pounding), "akkad"(stilt walking), "hanggul"(arm wrestling), and "uggub"(spear throwing using runo grass stalks). Ethnic games further ignited the spirit of Ifugaos due to the world-class record of Jason Balabal, the only Ifugao gold medalist in the just concluded 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) held in Indonesia on Nov.11-22. Balabal, 25, won gold in the 84-kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition.
     Congressman Teddy Baguilat and Governor Eugene Balitang encouraged all athletes to strive further and become new heroes. The theme for this year's provincial meet is "Ifugao: In Search of New Heroes".#

History of Ifugao

In Brief:

Ifugao was formerly known as a part of the old Mountain Province. It was created as an independent province on June 18, 1966 by virtue of Republic Act No. 4695, otherwise known as the Division Law of Mountain Province. Under this Law, Mountain Province was divided into four provinces namely: Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga Apayao, and Mountain Province. The word "Ifugao" means hill. The Spaniards changed 'pugo' to 'pugaw' and was finally changed by the Americans to "Ifugao". The province of Ifugao is a land-locked area located at the foot of the Cordillera mountain ranges. It is bounded by the high peaked mountain of Benguet in the western side, Nueva Vizcaya on the southern side, Isabela on the eastern side, and on the north by the protruding strip of the territory of Mountain Province. It is generally located at 120 degrees 40'17" longitude.

P506M irrigation, infrastructure projects: a blessing for Cordillera

The Philippine government through the Department of Agriculture will spend a total of P506 million over the coming fiscal year for irrigation and infrastructure projects in the Cordillera Administrative Region. This initiative will boost farming and fisheries sectors as the major livelihood in the region.

In a statement given by Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala on Dec. 2, he said the bulk of the fund amounting P268 million will go to the repair and rehabilitation of several irrigation systems in the provinces of Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Benguet. The three provinces have been hit by recent typhoons including the portions of the Banaue Rice Terraces. A commitment of P20 million by the department will be utilized to restore the Banaue Rice Terraces.

The other P120 million fund will be used to put up village-type rice processing centers. Another P48 million will go to the purchase of four-wheel tractors for the farmers. Moreover, more than P47 million will be utilized for hand tractors, establishment of fishponds, coffee seedling nurseries, and greenhouses. The remaining P2 million will be for the upgrade of a municipal agriculture trading center in the municipality of Lamut, Ifugao.

SUCs in CAR to get P12M for R&D projects in 2012

The Office of Senator Edgardo J. Angara committed to support Research and Development (R&D) projects for State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). The Senator pushed for a P12 million financial support for all SUCs in CAR which will be included in the 2012 national budget. The overarching goal is to support studies related to cultural preservation, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation. The said R&D fund shall be utilized by all SUCs in CAR namely: Abra State Institute of Science and Technology (ASIST), Apayao State College (ASC), Benguet State University (BSU), Ifugao State University (IFSU), Kalinga-Apayao State College (KASC), and Mountain Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC).
Aside from the above funding, Sen. Angara is also pushing for a P322 million budget increase for all SUCs in the country for tertiary maintenance and upgrade purposes. Sen. Angara, the chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts, and Culture, explained, "The 322 million is a small step in our efforts to increase government support for tertiary education, but it is also a good start. To make bigger strides, we must appeal to our leaders: the President and the members of congress to give a larger allocation for education in the years to come." Angara is a known advocate for teacher welfare, research development, cultural preservation, agricultural production and environmental protection.
